FERPA & International Kids' Data
Effective April 2026
Black Tutor Network treats children's data with extra care and follows the spirit and letter of leading children's-data laws worldwide.
United States — FERPA
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) protects the privacy of student education records. While BTN is not a school, we follow FERPA-aligned practices: parental control over child profiles, restricted access to session notes, and disclosure logs available on request.
United States — COPPA
For children under 13, we obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting personal information and provide parents the right to review and delete that information.
European Union — GDPR (incl. GDPR-K)
Children's personal data receives special protection. We rely on parental consent for users under 16 (or the lower age set by Member State law, down to 13). Lawful basis, data-minimization, and DSARs are honored.
United Kingdom — Children's Code (Age-Appropriate Design Code)
We apply the ICO's 15 standards for online services likely to be accessed by children, including high-privacy defaults and clear, age-appropriate explanations.
Canada — PIPEDA / Quebec Law 25
Meaningful parental consent and minor-friendly transparency for users in Canada and Quebec.
Brazil — LGPD
Specific consent of at least one parent/guardian for the processing of children's data, in best interests of the child.
